Cookies
Cookies and similar storage
Plain English: we store as little as possible, and nothing that needs your consent unless you opt in.
Last reviewed: 30 May 2026
The short version
- We use your browser’s storage to remember your consent choice and your accessibility settings. Nothing else, by default.
- Analytics is optional and off unless you turn it on. If you opt in, we load Google Analytics (which sets cookies) and cookieless Plausible.
- No advertising cookies, no tracking pixels, no social embeds.
What we store on your device
This site uses your browser’s localStorage, not traditional cookies. localStorage is similar: small bits of data the site keeps on your device. UK rules (PECR) treat both the same way.
1. Your consent choice — essential
When you make a choice in the welcome banner, we save it on your device under mycpc:consent. That stops the banner reappearing on every page. It records only your choice (analytics on or off) and the time you made it.
This is strictly necessary — without it we couldn’t honour your preference. Always on.
2. Accessibility preferences — strictly necessary functional storage
When you change the view mode or font — from the accessibility button in the top-right corner, or in the welcome banner — we save those choices on your device:
mycpc:view-mode— Standard, High contrast, or Easy readmycpc:font— default body font, or Atkinson Hyperlegible
These are set by you, on your device, to make the site usable for you. Under PECR these count as strictly necessary functional storage and don’t require consent. They never leave your device — we don’t send them to any server.
3. Analytics — optional, off by default
Analytics is off unless you turn it on in the welcome banner. We never load it without your consent, and you can withdraw that consent at any time. When you opt in, two tools run:
- Google Analytics 4. This does set cookies on your device (for example
_ga) so we can understand how the site is used across visits. We enable IP anonymisation. Google is a third party and processes this data on our behalf; see Google’s own privacy information for detail. - Plausible Analytics. Privacy-friendly and cookieless — it does not write to your device, and counts page views in aggregate with no personal identifiers.
Because Google Analytics sets cookies, UK rules (PECR) require your consent first — which is why it is off by default. Plausible would not legally need consent, but we hold it behind the same switch so a single choice covers all analytics.
What we do not use
- No advertising cookies or ad networks.
- No third-party social embeds (no Facebook, X, LinkedIn pixels).
- No session replay, heatmaps, or fingerprinting.
Change your mind
Your choice is not final. Reopen it here, or use the Cookie settings link in the footer of any page.
You can also clear this site’s storage from your browser settings.
